Pelican is a RoRo cargo ship able of carrying 125 trailers built in 1999 in Norway.

She was purchased by the Compagnie Maritime Nantaise in 2007, which chartered her to French Army until 2015. Corse’s local authorities then chartered her in order to replace SNCM’s services in case of further strikes, enabling the company to be delivered.

In January 2016 Brittany Ferries announced that the company has chartered the ship for one year on the purpose of creating a twice weekly freight-only service between Poole and Bilbao for un-accompagnied trailers. Her charter enables the company to increase its freight and passenger capacity on the routes linking Spain and Great Britain, whereas freight traffic on this route has increased by 20% during year 2014-2015. Her chartering would enable the company not shipping lorries on board its cruise ferries.
